Vintage DeSimone Italian pottery

A vintage set of hand crafted plates and bowls from the Italian pottery designer Desimone. Manufactured probably at the end of the 60s- 70s prior to his death. All 16 pieces have been wrapped and in boxes since the day of purchase. They have never seen the light of day and never used. The bowls are about 7 and 3/4 inches while the plates are 10 inches in diameter. Each plate and each bowl are signed and marked. All are marked number 13 except for one plate with the yellow rim and it is marked with the number 64. 7 of the bowls and 7 of the plates are one pattern and 1 bowl and 1 plate is slightly different pattern that is more yellow and has a star design in the middle. Regardless it blends will with the balance of the set. These pieces are highly desirable and in auctions such as 1stDibs and Invaluable sell for hundreds for a single piece. Giovanni De Simone, a son of Italian aristocrats, was born in 1930 in Palermo, Sicily. As a young child he traveled to Somali where he was inspired by tribal art. As an adult, he developed an appreciation for the cubist movement and its artists such as Klee, Ledger, Matisse, and Picasso. After World War II, the De Simone family, who were imprisoned, reunited in Rome. Giovanni studied briefly at Liceo Tasso in the city. The De Simones moved to Emilia-Romagna, the family location of Giovanni’s mother. Giovanni De Simone studied at the Instituto de’Art per La Ceramica in Faenza. Angel Biancini and Amselmo buccie were his instructors. Pottery quickly became his passion. De Simone opened his ceramic studio in Polarmo in the 1960s. Initial products included dinnerware with accompanying serving pieces, large panels, and decorative tiles. De Simone was assisted by four to six workers depending on the demand for his pieces.
