This is an authentic incised signature from the celebrated Canadian ceramic artist Walter Dexter, RCA (1931–2015). The signature reads "Dexter" in his distinctively sharp, stylized capital lettering scratched directly into the unglazed clay of the foot. Calgary-born Walter Dexter is widely considered one of Canada's most important abstract expressionist ceramicists. In 1992, he won the prestigious Saidye Bronfman Award for Excellence in Craft, the highest honor for a craftsperson in Canada. [1] (https://www.timescolonist.com/archive/obituary-victoria-ceramics-artist-walter-dexter-a-canadian-giant. This piece showcases his expert work with rich, deep earthy tones and experimental glazing. His work from his long-standing Vancouver Island period (Metchosin/Victoria) often featured intricate, deep-toned, or high-contrast raku and stoneware glazes. Collector Value: Mid-to-late century Canadian studio art pottery is highly collectible. Pieces with clear, clean incised signatures like this are highly prized among North American art pottery enthusiasts.
