• This was designed by acclaimed
Kwakwaka&#39;wakw and Tlingit artist
Corrine Hunt. Hunt, who co-designed the
medals for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic
and Paralympic Winter Games, often
uses these designs to explore themes of
environmental elements and Pacific
Northwest Coast traditions.
• The platter features abstracted
Indigenous motifs and is typically made
in Canada from a blend of recycled
marble and crushed glass resin.
• Symbolism: The inscription &#34;eagle
freedom in yourself&#34; highlights the eagle
as a symbol of freedom, strength, and
grace. In Northwest Coast Indigenous
traditions, eagles are also sacred
messengers to the creator.
• These come in three sizes. This is the

Caithness &#34;Flamenco&#34; Collection -
Hand-Blown Glass Vase
• The &#34;Flamenco&#34; range was originally
introduced around 1987, and designed
by Caithness&#39;s chief designer, Colin Terris.
• Colin Terris is considered the &#34;father of
modern Caithness&#34; art glass. He joined
the company as head design in 1968,
and took inspiration from both
Scandinavian minimalism, and the
natural Scottish landscapes.
• Caithness Glass is uniquely celebrated
for a proprietary color spectrum inspired
directly by the Scottish landscape.
1) The &#34;Heather&#34; Frit: The underlying
mottled lavender layer uses crushed
glass (frit) mixed into the clear body.
2) The &#34;Amethyst&#34; Canes: The dark
purple stripes are concentrated cane
glass melted onto the surface to contrast
against the softer lavender backing.
• This vase has &#34;shelf wear&#34; on the base
which indicates this piece has some age.
• There is a rough pontil mark, meaning
this was individually blown, and not
made in a factory where the pontil would
have been ground flat or smooth.

&#34;London Plane&#34; Bowl
• G. Michael Bonner (1938 - 2024) was
in Hamburg, Germany, grew up in
Denmark.
• Michael moved to Canada to study
forestry at the University of Toronto, and
obtained a PhD in Forestry in 1970.
• He was an active member of the Van.
Is. Wood turner&#39;s guild, and had a love
for the &#34;history&#34; of trees.
• London Plane is a hybrid of the
American Sycamore and Oriental plane.
• Shelbourne Memorial Avenue: In
1921, a living memorial of exactly 600
London plane trees was planted along
Shelbourne Street from Victoria through
Saanich to commemorate local soldiers
who fought and fell in World War I. I
believe this bowl was turned from part of
one of these trees.
• When quarter-sawn or turned, it
displays a distinct freckled, &#34;lacewood&#34;
pattern with prominent medullary rays.
• It typically features light reddish-brown
heartwood paired with pale yellowish
sapwood, which darkens over time.

Michael Bonnor - Hand-Lathed &#34;London Plane&#34; Bowl

Dene First Nations Birchbark Vessel
with Porcupine Quillwork
This specific style of cylindrical
birchbark container with sparse,
minimalist quillwork floral designs, as
well as serrated or &#34;pinked&#34; edge design,
combined with the vertical running stitch
is associated with the Dene First
Nations, Acho Dene Koe First Nation of
Fort Liard or Fort Simpson in the Northwest Territories.
• The image on the front is a stylized wild
rose flower branch which has been dyed
using commercial dyes.
• The top lip of this piece uses a single,
straight seam which is stitched using
split spruce root.
• The rest of the container uses a
simulated sinew to bind the vessel
together.
• Because of the use of the simulated
sinew, and the specific design, this piece
dates between 1970 and 1990.
• In very good condition, no cracks,
breaks to the birchbark, but there is
some damage to the quill work. View

Dene First Nations Birchbark Vessel with Porcupine Quillwork

(1890 - 1930) Chinese Porcelain Lidded
Food Container
• This container was manufactured in
Jingdezhen during the Late Qing Dynasty
to the early Republic period (circa 1890-
1930&#39;s).
• The jar is a hand-painted with a
polychrome enamel decoration over a
white glaze.
• It is consistent with the famille rose
palette with soft pinks, iron-reds, and
greens for the botanical motifs.
• This vessel has a nested fitting dome lid
that aligns smoothly with the rounded
sides of the main bowl. The top of the lid
is finished with a hollow, flared knob.
• These covered pots or deep food bowls
were widely produced in specialized kiln
centres like Jingdezhen between the late
19th and early 20th centuries. They
served multiple household purposes
functioning as decorative accessories or
containers for storing loose tea, ginger,
sweetmeats, or rice.
• The red stamp on the base of your
lidded container is a four-character
Qianlong reign mark read as &#34; 7 q&#34;
(Qianlong Nian Zhi), which translates to
&#34;Made during the Qianlong Reign.&#34;
• ‡ (Qian) - Top right, (# (Long) - Bottom
right, # (Nian) - Top left (meaning &#34;Year&#34;)
#4 (Zhi) - Bottom left (meaning &#34;Made&#34;).
• There is also a chop mark inside the
hollow knob of a lid. This served to unify
the two separate components during
production and firing in the kiln.

• Norman Peterson (1924-1989) was a
prominent, Canadian folk art woodcarver
from Winnipeg, Manitoba.
• He was a self taught wood carver, and
turned his creativity to carving owls and
other small birds.
• He primarily carved out of local Sumac
wood. The natural, swirling patterns of
the sumac grain accentuated the large
concentric facial rings of the bird&#39;s eyes.
• This piece is darted 1988, a year before
his death from a heart attack.

with a purple epoxy resin that stabilizes
the natural splits in the wood.

UVic in 2016.
• She is a multidisciplinary artist; a
ceramicist, a painter, and silk dyeing.
• This platter dates between 1990 and 2000.
• Cream coloured stoneware clay, fired in
an electric kiln to cone 6. Thrown and an
altered lip to give a fluid effect. Layers of
sprayed underglazes or oxides create a
flowing depth to the piece.

Canadian Beaver Ceramic Mug
• Herta (Gerz or Gertz) was born in (1913
- 2005), born in Hanau, Germany. She
was an accomplished potter running her
own ceramic factory in Gelnhausen,
Germany (1946 to 1951). She immigrated
in 1952 to Vancouver.
• This particular mug is a limited edition,
as it has a different handle then the mass
produced items, and has been hand
inscribed by Herta, and not the mold
pressed design.
• This specific 1965 sgraffito-based mug
was commissioned by the Hudson&#39;s Bay
Co. (HBC) executive offices in Vancouver.
• While &#39;B.C. Ceramics&#39; commercial
ledgers are no longer intact for an exact
count, ceramic historians and historical
market tracking estimate that fewer than
500 to 1,000 pieces were produced.
• The mug retains the original factory
brand green and gold foil sticker label.
• This is a slip cast white earthenware
clay with a black underglaze main body
and a hand painted beaver &#34;hugging&#34; a
birch tree, also done with underglazes,
and a clear glaze over all.

• The Baluch tribal weaving group,
specifically from the borderlands of
Northeast Iran (Khorasan province) or
Western Afghanistan (Herat region).
• It is characterized by the prominent
central mihrab (prayer niche) architectural
design framing a deep navy blue field,
flanked by stylized columns and a
bottom register featuring geometric Tree
of Life floral motifs
• Material & Composition:
• Pile & Warp Material: Both are 100%
natural hand-spun wool.
• Foundation: Wool or cotton weft and
warp with short hand-fringed ends.
• Dyes: Traditional organic/vegetable-
based color fast dyes
• The stepped arch structure at the top
orients the rug to towards Mecca.
• The triplet of branching plant design at
the bottom field represents longevity,
creation, and growth.
• This is a &#34;tribal&#34; weaving rather than a
mass produced rug. The blue colour
varies, this is called &#34;abrash&#34;, and occurs
in tribal weaving when a weaver runs out
of a batch of hand-dyed wool and spins
a new batch, and the colours vary.
• This rug contains approximately 9 to 10
horizontal knots per inch, so rug contains
roughly 278,375 individual hand-tied
knots.
• This rug was woven sometime between
the 1970&#39;s or 1980&#39;s, making it roughly
45 to 55 years old.

or tears, but does show wear from age.

James Bay Cree - Large Tamarack Goose
Decoy
• This type of decoy are traditionally
crafted by Mushkego, James Bay Cree,
and the Eeyou Cree hunters as lures for
migrating geese.
• The &#34;hole&#34; in the head section
represents the white patch on the side of
the head of the Canadian Goose.
• This decoy is bound using a very fine,
uniform commercial nylon thread or
monofilament line. Which dates this
decoy between 1970 and 1990, as
cotton thread was used before this date.
• The sculpture is woven from natural
tamarack (larch) twigs, which give off a
pleasant woodland fragrance. If the scent
fades, submerging the decoy in hot
water for ten minutes can revive it
• Originally this decoy had three
traditional larch brand legs. These have
been replaced at some point in the past.
• In very good condition, no breaks,
minor chipping of wood material. Note

that produced this board was likely
between 150 and 350 years old when it
was harvested

Tsimshian-style Moon/Sun design.
• The inner central image is executed via
sandblasting (which leaves the distinct,
even frosted texture)

Oiva Toikka - Italglass “Bamboo&#34; Serving Trays
• Oiva Toikka (1931-2019) was one of
Finland&#39;s most renowned glass artists.
• While Toikka first designed the famous
&#34;Bamboo&#34; art vases for the Finnish brand
Nuutajärvi in the 1960&#39;s.
• These are the &#34;medium&#34; size trays, and
was produced between 1966 and 1970.
• The underside of the trays has raised
relief resembling organic bamboo stalks,
tree bark, or shifting glacier ice. This
creates a visual optical illusion where the
glass shoots and shines in the light.
• These tray are are officially classified as
a mold-blown, or mouth-blown into a
mold art glass piece which also explains
the slight variance in size and weight.

“H&#34; or the foil sticker, so was made in the mid
to late 1990&#39;s.

• She was born in Kamloops B.C. and
graduated with a BA in Psychology from
the Univ. of Victoria in 1972.
• She&#39;s taken many courses in clay; from
the Nanaimo Pottery Co-op in 1990,
courses at the Arrowsmith Potters Guild,
and at the Metchosin Summer School of
the Arts.
• She joined a group of local potters,
including Algis to co-found Pyromania
Pottery in Coombs.
• Her home and studio &#34;Phoenix Gallery&#34;
are in Lantzville, BC.
• Cone 10 gas fired mug. Buff/cream
stoneware clay with a reflective tomaku
type glaze on the upper section and
interior. The side has a wax resist
abstract leaf or vine type design with an
overglaze, with the metallic &#34;silvery&#34;
color coming through.

Three Hand Thrown Stoneware Bowls
• I was unable to make out the names of
any of these who made these pieces.
Two have chop marks or signatures, one
is unmarked, but believe all of these are
from B.C.
• All have been fired in gas kilns to at
least cone 10 temperature.
1) A buff/cream stoneware clay with a
soft satin yellow background glaze and
free form over painting. no signature or
markings.
(5 cm. x 21.5 cm. x 21.5 cm.)
2) A buff/cream stoneware clay with a
thick textured shiny glaze. An
“Asian&#34; style chop mark on the base.
(7 cm.  15 cm. x 15 cm.)
3) A white stoneware, possibly porcelain
with a fine celadon crackle glaze.
Various oxides have been applied to form
a grape & vine leaf pattern. A reduction
atmosphere to create the copper red
colour, Signature of Mace on the base.
