Burl Bowl
• I have not been able to find out much
information about Dale L. Davies. He
lived and worked on Saltspring Is. and
sold his turned work at the craft fairs on
Saltspring Is., and Gabriola Is.
• The &#34;Maple&#34; he refers to is the Bigleaf
Maple (Acer macrophyllum) is the only
maple species in the Pacific Northwest
large enough to be harvested for timber.
• The wood is dominated by burl
patterns, which are dense, swirling grain
structures formed by a tree&#39;s response to
stress. You can see numerous small,
circular &#34;eyes&#34; or &#34;Birdseyes&#34; across the
surface.
• These are a rare growth phenomena
occurring in fewer than 1% of maples-
where dormant buds are trapped in the
grain.

recognition for his Haida-style paintings
and carvings, often featured on shaman
drums and cedar boxes.
• Clarence worked with Pan Pacific
Promotions Ltd. in B.C. to produce they
&#39;pressed wood&#34; giftware during the
1970&#39;s through the 1990&#39;s.

have a makers mark, so I believe it was
made in China.
• This enamelled cast iron Dutch ovens
are compatible with all cooktops,

500F or higher).
• The bumps on the inside of the cast
iron lid are a design feature for self-
basting. As food cooks, steam rises,
condenses on the cooler lid, and then
drips evenly from the spikes back onto
the food, rather than just running down
the sides of the pot.

• This is a vintage &#34;Stokes&#34;, (specifically Stokes Accents) 
which refers to a line of decorative glassware. 
These were made in the 1970&#39;s and 1980&#39;s.
• The Owl Vases were hand blown in
either China or Taiwan. First into a mold
and then hand formed for the beak and
&#34;ears&#34;, and finally the eyes were added.
• It has a smooth transition from milky
opalescent white at the top to a deep,
honey-like amber at the base.
• Traditionally, &#34;hobnail&#34; refers to a
pattern of raised, rounded &#34;nubbles&#34; or

were made in 1999 in Italy at their factory
in Omegna.
• Premium 18/10 Stainless Steel: This
specific grade (18% chromium, 10% nickel)
provides exceptional resistance to rust,
corrosion, and food acids. It is non-reactive,
meaning it won&#39;t impart a metallic taste to
delicate sauces.

• Sue Taylor was a founding member of
the Potters Place in Courtenay, BC.
• Taylor has been making pots for over 40
years. She learned her craft in the U.K.
as she was accepted into 2nd year
ceramics at the Univ. of Western
England, for 1986 to 87. under the
tutelage of internationally known
ceramist Walter Keeler.
• She continued studies here at North
Island College.
• While in the U.K., Sue was part of a
joint show at the Victoria and Albert

• Neither of these candle holders have a
chop mark, or a signature, so I have not
been able to discover the name of the
wood turner. I believe these were made
in BC, as burled and birds-eye Big Leaf
Maple are found here.
• These candle holders can be described
as a hand-turned Big Leaf burl maple tea
light holder, characterized by a low-
profile &#34;donut&#34; shape with highly figured
grain typical of burl wood.
• The wood has been polished to a
smooth, lustrous finish that highlights the
natural amber and golden-brown tones
of the maple.
• Because they are hand turned, they are
not exactly the same. Note differences in
size in the measurement section.

Toad/Frog &#34;Wealth Pot&#34; Trinket Box
• While both Japan and China produce
toad-themed items, specific visual image
clues point to a Chinese origin.
• The &#34;Wealth Pot&#34; Motif: The interior
relief featuring a lily pad and flower (or
lotus) is a hallmark of the Chinese Feng
Shui &#34;Wealth Toad&#34; or &#34;Money Frog&#34; (Jin
Chan). These are often designed as
&#34;wealth pots&#34; meant to store coins or
small treasures to attract prosperity.
• The uniform, dark, &#34;knobbly&#34; texture and
the molded interior relief are characteristic
of modern &#34;hand-painted&#34; resin forms.

Mary Gregory - Large Blue Glass Pitcher
• While named after Mary Gregory, an
artist who worked for the Boston &
Sandwich Glass Company in the 1880&#39;s,
this style actually originated in Bohemia
which is now Czech Republic.
• The extravagantly ruffled or crimped
top is a classic indicator of this being
made in the late 19th or early 20th
century (c. 1880-1910).
• From further research, concerning
lightness of the piece, thinness of the
glass, and the small included bubbles,
this piece more likely dates 1880 to
1890.
• The girl is depicted in a classic 19th-
century pose, seated on a fence or wall
in a pastoral setting designed to evoke a
sense of innocence and Victorian charm.
• The white enamel has different
thicknesses. This &#34;built-up&#34; effect
creates a 3D texture (impasto), especially
visible in the folds of her dress and the
foliage which indicate it was hand-
painted by a skilled artisan, rather than
stenciled or mass-produced.
• In mixed condition, there are no chips,
but there was a major break in the past
to the base, which has been repaired. So

• Birdie Boone is a potter. She received
her BA in Fine Arts from The College of
William and Mary in Virginia in 1994 and
her MFA in Artis & Ceramics from the
Univ. of Mass. in Dartmouth in 2005.
• Birdie was a long-term residentency at
the Archie Bray Foundation for the
Ceramic Arts in Helena, Montana, (2007
2009).
• She has a full-time studio in rural
southwestern Virginia.
• This mug is hand/slab formed. It&#39;s
made with a dark brown almost black
clay fired to cone 6 in an electric kiln.
• The walls almost &#34;porcelain&#34; thin, and
the mug itself is light weight.
• The overall mug features a steel-grey
glossy glaze with many tiny speckled
brownish flecks and dots.
• There are &#34;drip marks&#34; that go up,
rather than down, so a very clever firing
process indeed!
• While the handle looks small it works
wonderfully with the thumb resting on the
little protrusion at the lip.
• The most unusual thing is the base.
The potter intentionally curved it slightly
so the mug rocks gently when set down.

• The markings on the base of the vase
confirms it is a piece of Kyoto Satsuma
pottery, specifically attributed to the
workshop of Kusube Sennosuke (1859-1940).
• The combination of the specific maker&#39;s
mark and the export stamp narrows down
the age to the 1920&#39;s or 1930&#39;s.
• This type of pottery is known as Kyoto
Satsuma, distinct for its finely crackled
cream glaze and heavy use of Moriage
raised enamel and gilding.
• Symbolism of the Chrysanthemum:
The chrysanthemum is the national
