Unique record of an amateur botanist&#39;s work, this multi-volume set of notebooks contains colored pencil drawings of flowering plants and their Latin names, with various inserts of plant lists, and a few pressed flowers. They were once part of the library at the Apostolic School of LaSalette, in Hartford, CT, where missionaries are trained for work around the globe. The artist, E.J. Plattier, was a brother there; the initials M.S. after his name stand for Missionarium Saletiniensis, which means Missionaries of Our Lady of LaSalette. One penciled note indicates 1912 as the creation date. Plain composition notebooks, some wrapped in brown paper, all in good condition with some wear to corners and covers.  We have Volumes I-II and IV-XIV--we&#39;re looking for Vol III.

Vintage Quilt

We've nicknamed this piece the Rough Rider as it recalled Teddy Roosevelt's Cavalry command  to us. So we've included a "Modern Library" book and a small popular pamphlet from the long-gone John Hancock Insurance free series highlighting Teddy's travels and hunts.  The sculpture itself is a fine untitled, undated, cast brass or bronze sculpture depicting a rider on a horse scoping out the scene, most likely a hunter of sorts. Signed in a mold plaque to back of plinth, and sitting on a black marble base. Leonardo Rossi was an Italian American sculptor born in 1957, known for his figurative sculptures. Sculpture rests on base easily but can be detached, one screw in marble - see picture. Authenticity indeterminate.

Leonardo Rossi Brass Bronze sculpture

Skilled craftsmanship is on exhibit in this hand-carved wooden table, with delicate brass inlay of flowers, leaves, and brass wire stems. The inlays continue on the scalloped skirt, and on the turned pedestal base and four scrolled legs. A few small areas of wear commensurate with age, but overall inlays are intact. Wood unknown, possibly teak or mahogany. One crack in pedestal, as shown. Ground floor.

Brass Inlay Table

An Indian dowry box with traditional carved and notched hardwood and iron hardware.  Punctuated by four circular raised carvings on top with several iron bands around the box in addition to a metal handle . The box has a metal clasp and two long hinges which open one half of the top face of the box (one metal strap has missing nails).  Dowry is still part of the Indian wedding tradition and a dowry box like this would be used to keep jewelry and special embroidered fabrics. A simple hand-made folk art box, lined in red felt, probably stained pine, embellished with wooden stars (one chipped) and brass accents and holding vintage national and international maps.  And then the puzzle boxes. Two are signed by Richard Rothbard, and trust me, they ARE puzzle boxes!  One a speckled light birch color but filled with dark veins.  Research says it may be spalted maple or box elder burl wood, featuring unique natural spalting patterns caused by fungi. Rothbard has an interesting history and has called his process BOXOLOGY.  Here&#39;s a quote: &#34;The name Boxology describes a process that allows me to explore the endless possibilities that wood working has to offer. I tell stories, take the most beautiful woods and turn them in to complex puzzle boxes and design display shelving and furniture that makes wood exciting in its simplest forms. There is no end to it... and as you will see there are endless beginnings, which I best describe as poetry, psychology and philosophy in wood.&#34;   Also a sweet little monkey box that we did not dare to take apart for fear we&#39;d never get it back together!

Big Lot of LPs

An antique Springer Torsion Balance, Style 251 - a high-precision, Class A apothecary/pharmaceutical scale from the early 20th century. Housed in a very handsome dark-stained oak and glass case with two removable weighing pans. We did not dare open and did not want to disturb too much so will leave that to a knowledgable collector. Patent numbers are obvious in pictures. This scale uses corrosion-resistant alloy torsion bands instead of <span style"background-color: rgb(255, 193, 7);">cutting</span>-edges to measure, offering high sensitivity for compounding.  Both 8" glass weighing pans intact and un-chipped. With adjustable side bolts for precise balance adjustment to surface.  Examples of these, such as the one in the National Museum of American History (Acc# 288176), are highly regarded for their role in the history of measurement. A spectacular artifact and a testament to intricate innovation. The technology was developed by Frederick A. Roeder and Alfred Springer, who established the Torsion Balance and Scale Co. in 1882. In 1891, the Franklin Institute awarded a medal to Roeder and Springer for their innovative balance.  FRAGILE and heavy - bring box and padding - first floor .

Hand-painted porcelain pieces include a melon pot with green and blue florals picked out in raised gold, with stippling and gold handles to body and lid, made in China. A hinged box with brass rims centers a 1700s-era couple in full color on the lid, and opens to reveal two dishes with the same couple; gold detailing; blue beehive ink mark on bottom of box, along with decal &#34;Original Arnart Creation Japan.&#34; A miniature teapot with hinged lid and brass rims, centering a sun face on a vivid blue ground, with gold trim, unmarked. Round bisque 4-legged trinket jar, with a lid decorated with relief green leaves and frilled edge, &#34;Japan&#34; decal on bottom. And an oval trinket box with basket weave pattern on box and relief flowers on the lid, mark on underside of a crown over N, indicating Capodimonte. Some slight chipping to one flower, as shown.

Lidded Porcelain Smalls

Edward Lear, 1804-1888, is best known for his children&#39;s and nonsense poems, including &#34;The Owl and the Pussycat,&#34; and his likewise silly limericks. He was also a self-taught naturalist and artist, and at an early age was selling illustrations for use in natural history books. (Unlike Audubon, Lear drew from life, and spared his subjects!) This talent brought him to the attention of the Earl of Derby, who provided him with residency and funding for some years, and launched his career by introducing him to the world of monied British peers. Lear was the 20th of 21 children, whose parents had a rocky financial existence at times, and suffered from respiratory issues as well as epilepsy, none of which put a damper on his rise. When his poor eyesight made it increasingly difficult to complete his detailed nature drawings, the Earl provided funds and introductions for a move to Italy, where Lear became a landscape painter and began to write his poems. This pair of hand-colored engravings date to 1843, and show a Blue-banded Nondes and a Kuhl&#39;s Coriphilus, both engraved after Lear&#39;s original by William H. Lizars. Somewhat unusually, Lizars engraved these plates on steel rather than copper, and the harder medium allowed for a finer line. They were hand-colored before publication, and here present a lovely pair in double cream mattes, framed under glass in gilt faux bamboo. Excellent condition.

Pair Hand-colored Edward Lear Engravings 

Two pieces from highly collectible Roseville Pottery, both in excellent condition. The vintage Blue Water Lily vase has triangular double handles, and floats creamy water lily blossoms and leaves over soft ciel blue with horizontally incised marks to mimic water. This pattern was introduced in 1943, and the relief markings on the underside, Roseville U.S.A. 77-8&#34;, date it to the mid-late 1940s. The antique brown and cream Donatello bowl is decorated with cherubs alternating with sheltering trees all around, with pale green fluting around the base. This bowl is somewhat unusual in the rim is plain, rather than repeating the fluting on the bottom, as in most examples we&#39;ve seen. The Donatello line was introduced in 1915-6; see Rv inked underglaze marking on bottom, in use from 1910-1927, dating this to the early 1920s. Some crazing, as expected in a piece of this age. Roseville Pottery was founded in Roseville, Ohio, in 1890. In the next couple of decades, it acquired several other potteries, and by the turn of the century had four plants and 325 employees. Highly successful until imported reproductions began to undermine sales, the pottery sold in 1954 and ended production of all Roseville lines.

Large Bronze-finish Eagle

Larger-scale display jars are fine examples of hand-painted Asian china. The octagonal jar features alternating yellow and blue sides, all heavily decorated with flowers in pots, and animals including bats, birds, butterflies, continued in likewise alternating panels around the mouth. Reign mark inked in red on bottom. Lidded temple jar is covered with irises, peonies, foliage, butterflies on a black ground, in the famille noire colors. The lid has a fixed brass ring lift. Inked NIPPON on bottom. And a contemporary ginger jar, no lid, with blue and white scrolling florals on a cheery yellow ground. Bring box and packing materials.

Big Lot of Collectible Ashtrays and Lighters

Cast metal buddha, possibly bronze, stands solemnly on a circular base with lotus motif, the right hand raised in the abhaya mudra position. This mudra indicates protection from fear and anger, as the raised hand serves as a shield against negative aspects, while at the same time the open palm signifies peace. The left hand is fully extended, with the palm open, in the varada mudra position, symbolizing charity, compassion, and selflessness in service to others.  The standing pose also indicates a buddha firmly grounded, and ready to teach. A heavy statue, with hollow base.

Large Bronze/Brass Buddha

Hand-carved, the larger of the two showing inlaid shell or abalone perhaps. A few strakes missing or tangled - not perfect. 

According to the St. Louis Art Museum, The &#34;waka taua&#34; (war canoe) demonstrates the elegance of Maori ocean vessels. Maori communities presented small scale models of canoes as gifts to important visitors to Aotearoa during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Capable of carrying up to 100 warriors using paddles or sails, full-scale war canoes were the largest and most important of the various watercraft built by the Maori. The bow, stern, and strakes were carved separately and bound together to form a sleek, efficient sea-going vessel. When not in use, a &#34;waka taua&#34; was unlashed and dismantled, the carved components removed, and the hull protected from the elements in a special structure built near the water’s edge.

Pair Heather Goff Terra Cotta Mermaid & Merman Tiles

A pair of terra cotta tiles from Heather Goff of Martha&#39;s Vineyard. Goff carves each tile in clay, then creates a plaster mold so that multiple copies can be made. Each tile is painted by hand, using her own overglaze recipes, with her stamp on the underside. This pair holds a mermaid and a merman, each cavorting with dolphins atop waves, and surrounded by a stylized stamped border. A ceramicist, sculptor, and illustrator, Goff teaches, and has exhibited widely. Very good condition, with one chip as shown. Ready to hang.
