Unique and significant  bronze clock on black marble base, signed Piolaine. After Michel-François Piolaine, who worked in the late 1700-early 1800s period, before disappearing around 1815. His Paris workshop continued to produce clocks under his widow&#39;s oversight, until around 1820. Here, a patinated bronze classical figure, possibly Juno or her Greek equivalent Hera, is seated on a simple plinth and flanked by two lions. Her robes reveal sandaled feet, a diadem crowns her braids. She holds in her lap the clock, with white enamel ring with hand-painted numerals surrounding a pressed bronze face, in a bronze case with glass door. Spiral-driven movement is accessed through a bronze door on the reverse. Stamped signature Piolaine on back of plinth. Minus key, untested. This is a large, heavy piece; bring box and packing material. Ground floor.

Signed Piolaine Bronze Clock

This map is based on an 18th century re-strike of a 17th century map from the original wood plate by Sir Robert Dudley, 1574-1649, engraved by Anton Francesco Lucini, and published in Dudley&#39;s atlas &#34;Arcano del Mare&#34; or &#34;The Secret of the Sea.&#34; Titled &#34;Carta Particolare della Nuova Belgia é Parte della Nuova Anglia,&#34; it shows coastal regions from present-day Cape May in New Jersey up into Maine. This feat of cartography was a first in several ways: the first known sea chart of New England, first such New England map to use Mercator&#39;s projection, and first to show winds, currents, and magnetic variations in compass readings, according to the history included on the reverse and other sources. The &#34;Arcano&#34; also contained information on navigation, ship-building, and cartography. 

Dudley was the illegitimate son of the Earl of Leicester, a prominent backer of various expeditions and a favorite of Elizabeth I. The Earl left Dudley a generous inheritance, allowing him to fund his own expeditions. After a failed attempt to establish his legitimacy through the English Star Chamber, he moved to Italy and became the naval advisor for the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinand I, and began to assemble his notes from various expeditions including his own, and some of those of Sir Francis Drake and Thomas Cavendish. The result was his &#34;Arcano del Mare,&#34; completed in 1636, and published by Dudley himself in 1646, with a second state in 1661, after his death. Note the cartouche with a bearded man atop the title, the compass rose, and the elaborate Florentine calligraphy, added by engraver Lucini. (Lucini stated that he had used over 5,000 lbs. of copper in the plates for the &#34;Arcano.&#34;) Many modern-day place names are already discernible. This map was reportedly removed from the 4-volume set &#34;The Documentary History of New York,&#34; published in 1851 and containing many fold-out maps; this one faced the title page. Note evidence of binding at the left edge--and  shows folds, some foxing, a small tear at bottom--all in keeping with its age. Resting on a backing board and framed under glass in a rope-motif wood frame.

Restrike of 16th C New England Map by Sir Robert Dudley

Depictions of historic French palaces, long gone. The first is &#34;The Palace of St. Cloud on the Side of the Orange Garden,&#34; which was burned down in 1870 during the Franco Prussian war. One year later, the palace in the second image, &#34;A View of the Palace and Walks of the Thuilleries,&#34; was burned by the Paris Commune, a movement that grew from the French soldiers who had fought against the Prussian Army, and later destroyed in 1883. Both show pleasure seekers enjoying the beautiful grounds, under blue skies, oblivious to coming events. The artist, Jaques Rigaud, created many images of both French and British sites, and populated them with middle-class holidayers in a early example of direct marketing, as they were also the primary buyers of the reproductions of his work. Rigaud, 1680-1754, was a draftsman and engraver, active in France and England in the early 1700s. His masterwork, a series of 138 prints of French palaces, was eventually completed by his nephew, Jean-Baptiste Rigaud. &#34;St Cloud&#34; was engraved by Samuel Sparrow, and published by Laurie & Whittle engravers in May 1794; &#34;The Thuilleries&#34; was published by renamed James Whittle & R.H. Laurie in June 1818, engraver not credited except for a mark T & S in the print, lower right corner. These copperplate etchings have been hand colored, and were likely plates from books. Framed under glass in scrolled wood frames brushed with gilt. &#34;Thuilleries&#34; has some small areas of damage at bottom of print, as shown.

Pair Antique Hand-colored Etchings of French Palaces

This painting of a demon is somewhat similar to a thangka, an aide to meditation practice in Tibetan Buddhism, which may depict graphical images such as mandalas, or more commonly figures such as teachers, deities, or, as here, demons. This piece centers a demon in the shape of a dragon, in a cartouche, with lotus, peony and other flowers filling each corner. This is likely a thunder dragon, and symbolizes protective powers, as well as discernment between what is delusion and what is real. Shades of red, gold, deep teal, and rose. Painted on paper, with a very light underlayer of gesso, and apparently stored rolled up, as we see cracks and also evidence of folds. Nonetheless a vividly-colored and distinctive antique painting, under glass in a thin faux bamboo wood frame.

Antique Tibetan Dragon Painting

A nautical miscellany, highlighted by a single tillerman bookend, stamped Leonard Craske, JB 2653. Jennings Brothers, a CT foundry, produced this gilt bronze piece modeled after the Fishermen&#39;s Memorial in Gloucester, which was designed by sculptor Leonard Craske (1882–1950). The statue, Craske&#39;s signature piece, was created after extensive time spent with Gloucester&#39;s fishermen, at sea and on shore, and also direct input from them as to the design, which was at first thought to look more like a well-heeled yachtsman than a working mariner. Craske, originally from London, was a multi-talented artist--a draftsman, photographer, actor, with a background in medical studies and various sciences. He was also known as the life of the party in the Rocky Nook artists&#39; colony during the 1920s and 30s. His work may be seen at the Cape Ann Museum, and at various sites around New England. This lot also includes cast iron mermaids, a vintage brass and wood spyglass, a carved wood stick mimicking a bird&#39;s claw, decorative but functional brass portholes, brass easel-style sailboat from Penco, small copper light with fresnel-style lens, untested, and more. Seafaring Collectibles, including Leonard Craske Bookend

Fully leaded stained glass autonomous panel, in excellent condition. A floral border surrounds the Deco-ish central area. Opalescent pieces make up the majority of the design, with a few scrolls of transparent golden hammered glass to provide bright accents, and eight small grass-green jewels symmetrically placed along the fillet. Green, white, and red to orange florals, with larger pale yellow and white central pieces, all surrounded by the fillet, in mainly blues shading to purple. Opalescent glass was introduced by John LaFarge, a giant of stained glass design and production, and adopted by Tiffany. It is produced by blending two or more colors, and creates unique panels. (Examples of LaFarge&#39;s windows may be seen at Trinity Church in Copley Square, and at the McMullen Museum at Boston College.) The age of this piece is unknown. One small dent in frame, as shown. Featured here: a 19th-century replica of a court foil or rapier, wire wrapped with a hilt made of chased copper alloy and a guard decorated with a possibly symbolic equestrian scene and a matching pommel. Excalibur is the legendary, magical sword of King Arthur, often depicted as a symbol of divine sovereignty, bestowed upon him by the Lady of the Lake or drawn from a stone. It represents Arthur&#39;s rightful kingship and wields immense power, with its scabbard (not available here) , in particular, providing protection against fatal wounds in battle. This replica is made from very worldly sources - brass, high carbon steel, and wood - sorry, probably not forged from Dragon&#39;s blood.  But a fine ornamental piece - some indeterminate spatters on one side near the guard, otherwise, fine. 42&#34;L

Seven Painted Wood Ducks

An elegant pair of armchairs in the &#34;fauteuil à la reine&#34; style, popular during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI. They feature cream-color matte brocade upholstery, double welting, curving arm supports, cabriole legs with pad feet, and hand carved details on the wooden frames, including shell motif on crest rails and skirts, and leaf motif on knees and feet. The unpainted wood keeps these from feeling fussy, and allows them to work in many settings. Excellent condition, with some very slight discoloration to areas of seats, as shown. Stone Eggs and Marbles

A commemorative portrait of the French 74-gun warship &#34;Invincible,&#34; dedicated to Rear Admiral Sir Peter Warren, who seized the ship in May of 1747, under the command of Vice Admiral George Anson. Although the British fleet numbered only 14 ships, and the French fleet 30 ships, the British prevailed and captured 6 ships plus 7 merchantmen in a 5 hour battle. The engagement, known as the First Battle of Finisterre, was part of the War of Austrian Succession, 1740-1748. The ship became part of the British fleet, and was the first 74-gun ship in the British Navy, sadly wrecked after running aground in 1758. This color lithograph shows the Invincible broadside and flying the Union Jack after her capture, with other ships of the British fleet in the distance. Engraved by John Boydell, after artist Robert Short. The original hangs at the National Maritime Museum in London. Matted with hand-inked gold rule, under glass in a wood and giltwood frame. Three Iconic pieces that suggest Afghan or possibly SE Asian origin and style. But note, the Rupee on the necklace which was representative prior 1925. The Afghan Afghani (AFN), replaced the Afghan rupee in 1925. The Taliban, which took control in 2021, has banned the use of foreign currencies, including the Pakistani rupee, in local transactions, enforcing the use of the Afghani. Perhaps these decorative items were allowed to use outdated coin imagery?  Expert insight welcomed!

You want sturdy? You got it. Hefty storage/carpenter&#39;s trunk in a striking, well-worn, fiery orange/red finish.  Secured with metal edging and hardware, wrought iron handles, corner protectors, and a simple lock (no key - we&#39;re still searching!) Balanced and framed at base and top with an extra thick layer of wood on all sides for extra protection. All original and in fine shape.  Offered here with three solid rustic stools of various sizes - two with metal Walpole stamps.  Some cracking on the legs but does not appear to affect the weight capacity.

According to the Industrial Heritage website, the Athol Machine Company is the grand-daddy of tool manufacturing in New England.  This is the company that was formed in the spring of 1868 to produce L S Starrett&#39;s invention of the meat chopper, and other inventions. They started making vises circa 1873.
