Lot #418: French Octagonal Jeton – Manufactures de Saint-Gobain, Chauny et Cirey – Mid-19th Centur

Historic French octagonal jeton issued by the Manufactures de Saint-Gobain, Chauny et Cirey, one of France’s most important industrial companies. The reverse inscription records the company’s origins and later reorganization, noting its establishment in 1702 and its reconstitution as a société anonyme by royal ordinance dated February 17, 1850. Jetons of this type were produced in the mid-19th century for corporate and commemorative use. Examples of this jeton are known to have been struck in silver. The piece displays appropriate weight, colour, and wear consistent with silver; however, the metal has not been formally tested.
