Mario Bucovich, born Marius von Bucovich, was the son of a Habsburg baron. He worked in photography studios in the 1920s and '30s. He traveled to and lived in Paris, London, Spain, New York, honing his craft and publishing his own photography books. In 1939, Bucovich moved to Mexico City, where he worked as a photographer until his death in a traffic accident there. While in Mexico, he produced a color portrait series of Russian expat and Communist leader Leon Trotsky. Color photography at the time was largely reserved for commercial work, as seen in his Mexico Lindo series, which was reproduced in color lithographs such as this portfolio presented for auction.
